AWARDS: David Tennant Wins Acting Award For Mad To Be Normal

Image
The Newport Beach Film Festival wrapped up last night with the announcement of the winners of the 2017 Festival Awards. Overall, the California-based festival was attended by over 50,000 visitors and screened over 350 films from 58 countries, which competed for Jury, Festival Honours and Audience Awards.

David Tennant was among those receiving Festival Honours, being recognised for Outstanding Achievement In Filmmaking: Acting for his role as the 1960s psychiatrist RD Laing in the new movie Mad To Be Normal. Mad To Be Normal, written and directed by Robert Mullan, is based on Laing's life during the late 1960s when he set up the controversial anti-psychiatry project at Kingsley Hall in East London. Laing advocated a non-confrontational approach to mental illness and his project encouraged patients experiencing severe mental illness to work through their psychosis while living in the medication-free community as equals with medical practitioners.

Mad To Be Normal also stars Elisabe…

NEW INTERVIEW: David Tennant Talks First Night Nerves

Image
The night before the first public performance, you’re actually in the theatre, doing technical rehearsals and making sure everything runs smoothly. It’s all very busy – it’s not a night off. But I think that’s best because, for me, it’s really an exercise in panic management. You’re trying to convince your brain that it’s possible to remember a sequence of words and movements in front of 850 people without having a heart attack. I don’t think I’d want to be sitting at home trying to be calm, because I’m sure that wouldn’t work.

The whole challenge is convincing yourself that you’re not going to forget your lines or wet yourself or whatever. You start rehearsing these little speeches in your head, where you have to apologise to the audience because you can’t carry on and you’re going to have to go to your dressing room and have a little cry.

You can be rehearsing those speeches while you’re actually on stage, saying your lines. It’s all mind games, really.

THROWBACK THURSDAY: David Tennant: My Theatre Debut

Image
Today's Throwback Thursday post is from The Independent back 2002 and sees David talk about his theatrical debut.

I made my professional debut with the 7:84 Scottish theatre company in a touring production of The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. The 7:84 was formed by John McGrath in the 1970s and is still going strong. It takes two or three shows a year on one-night-stand tours around the Highlands and Islands, stopping longer in the larger towns.
Anyway, I went for the audition just after graduating from the Royal Scottish Academy aged about 20 - a single-minded youngster, I had started there at the tender age of 17 - and landed the part of Giri the hitman: my first professional part.

I think there can have been only about six of us in the production - I suspect for monetary reasons rather than artistic ones. Arturo Ui was one of those Brecht plays with thousands of characters; inevitably, we shared them all out, with the help of a few wigs and fake noses. It was great fun; we wer…
