SPOILERS: Marvel's Jessica Jones Renewed For Season 2 - Casting & Plot Details So Far Unconfirmed

Today's Netflix presentation at the TV Critics Association 2016 Winter Press Tour opened a few hours ago with the welcome news that Marvel's Jessica Jones would be back for a second season. There followed a Jessica Jones panel attended by writer and showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, Marvel's Head of Television Jeph Loeb and cast members Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter, Carrie-Anne Moss and Rachael Taylor.

The panel members, who had only just learned of the series renewal themselves, discussed the success of the first season and the relationships between the characters, particularly praising the quality of writing and directing and the strong female roles. They also looked ahead to season 2 and in doing so they revealed spoilers about season 1 and in particular about David Tennant's character Kilgrave. Therefore beware of reading on if you have not yet watched all of the episodes yet.

In the first season, Kilgrave and his history with former superhero Jessica Jones was what defined her and what drove her. His past treatment of her was what made her retire from the costumed heroes business and forced her to lay low; his return is what inspires her to meet her demons head on. "Your protagonist is often defined on how strong your antagonist is," Jeph Loeb explained.

However, anyone who has reached the end of the series will be aware of the fate that befell Kilgrave, making it very unlikely that David Tennant would return as the character in season 2. The show's creator acknowledged that fans of the show would love to see him back, but implied that his arc may be well and truly over and Jessica will be moving on with her life in future episodes. Therefore, David's return is unlikely.

"When you have David Tennant, you want him around forever," she told the assembled critics, "But the show is called Jessica Jones."

However, Krysten seemed to suggest that Kilgrave's presence would never leave Jessica, perhaps hinting that there might be some glimpses of him in flashback.

"For Jessica, that final moment, that victorious triumphant moment when she kills Kilgrave, I found that very conflicting in terms of Jessica’s head space," she explained. "He’s the reason she got up every day. He’s the reason she went out in the world and gave her purpose. Her past trauma doesn’t go away with his death.”

David himself had already revealed that he did not expect to be back in the event of a second season. Talking to The Hollywood Reporter late last year, he said,

"I was only looking to do one [season], so I didn't quite know where it was going to end up. But it wasn't a massive surprise for me. I knew I wouldn't come back for series two. Whether that meant I was going to be locked up in jail or dead, you never quite know with shows set in these worlds. But it was a perfect story arc. It was all about Jessica empowering herself and taking control and literally slaying her demons. It would have been unsatisfying if it didn't end with Kilgrave being put out of action."

"I would never even try to guess what they have planned for a second season," he added. "I don't think I'll have a central part to play because what is interesting now is where Jessica goes after Kilgrave."

Marvel's Jessica Jones Season 1 is available to stream via Netflix worldwide.
