Andrew Buchan On Broadchurch 2: "It'll Be Nothing Like Midsomer Murders"

As the multi-BAFTA winning drama Broadchurch prepares to return for its second series there is naturally going to be much speculation on the direction that the plot of the sequel will take. Will it be a straight follow on to the event of the first story, which explored the murder of young Danny Latimer? Or will troubled detectives Hardy and Miller (David Tennant and Olivia Colman) be called upon to solve another killing in the tiny coastal town?

Andrew Buchan, who plays grieving father Mark Latimer seems to throw doubt upon the second theory in an interview with The Independent.

“It’ll be nothing like Midsomer Murders and I don’t mean that in a disrespectful way – far from – I’m a huge fan of Neil Dudgeon, if that helps,” he explained. “But by that, I just mean plot-wise, it’ll be vastly different. I can’t give anything away about the plot,”

In actual fact he can reveal very little; series creator and executive producer Chris Chibnall, who has also said that the new series will not follow the same structure as the first, is keeping everything tightly under wraps and, as with series one, is revealing next to nothing to his cast.

“I’ve only read episodes one and two, so I’ve no idea what’s coming,” says Andrew Buchan. “It’s like that feeling, you know at the end of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade when he has to step out, where he has to trust that the path is there, we’re all trusting that the path is there. Stepping out and hoping that we’re not going to plummet.”

Broadchurch series two is currently shooting in the West Country with production expected to continue until September. Returning cast include David Tennant, Olivia Colman, Andrew Buchan, Jodie Whittaker, Arthur Darvill, Joe Sims, Jonathan Bailey and Carolyn Pickles. Viewers can look forward to a host of new faces in as yet unnamed roles: new cast additions include Charlotte Rampling Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Eve Myles, James D'Arcy and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. It is thought that the series will debut on ITV early in 2015.
