The BBC Thought David Tennant & Benedict Cumberbatch Weren't Sexy Says Steven Moffat

Doctor Who and Sherlock writer Steven Moffat has told how the BBC didn't consider David Tennant or Benedict Cumberbatch sexy enough for their roles as Casanova and Sherlock.

Talking during a Q&A at the Hay Festial Moffat said he had been told Cumberbatch was not sexy enough to be cast as the detective, but said he was pleased he'd stuck to his decision to still cast the actor.

He compared it to David Tennant being cast in Casanova saying:
"They said of casting David Tennant as Casanova, 'Damn, you should have cast someone  sexier'. With Benedict Cumberbatch, we were told the same thing. 'You promised us a sexy Sherlock, not him.''

Moffat also told the audience that Doctor Who was almost axed after David Tennant quit as the Doctor - read the full story on that here.
