David Tennant Review Of 2013: May - June



We continue with our review of David's projects of 2013.

As we move towards late spring, filming wraps on Doctor Who and David takes on a new film project. David also enjoys award success.


May

TV
Broadchurch  was released on DVD on 20th May, with the 3-disc set including a Behind The Scenes documentary. Watch a clip here:



Joe Sims talked to us exclusively about Broadchurch including what it was like to work with David.
David talked about Olivia Colman while Olivia anticipated Broadchurch 2: "It sounds really, really exciting!". She also revealed that the stars of the show stayed sober because they were scared that they would inadvertently let slip the ending.
The drama was scheduled to begin on BBC America on August 7th, and the broadcaster launched their Broadchurch page.
The Stage listed Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller among their Top TV Detectives and TV Choice opened the first round of voting for their 2013 Awards, inviting votes for David, Olivia and Broadchurch.
Shooting of the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special wrapped on May 5th. Doctor Who Magazine confirmed that David would be the only past Doctor to return for the episode.



Some of the stars of the special talked about taking part. John Hurt hinted for the first time that he would be playing an incarnation of the Doctor. Billie Piper said, "The show is a gift" and that David Tennant and Matt Smith were her good friends and were both brilliant. Jemma Redgrave said, "It’s philosophical, it’s deep, it’s funny, it’s heartbreaking, it’s just great and it’s got an extraordinary cast." As rumours and speculation about the special grew, Steven Moffat warned fans not to believe everything that he heard...or didn't hear. He also spoke about David and Matt having the two Doctors on set together:
"Matt and David together was quite special. They really, really, really got on well with each other and adored working with each other. It was just properly funny. The two of them together in particular are really, really funny."
The BBC released a first video interview of David and Matt talking about working together:



The Politician's Husband concluded on BBC Two with almost 2 million tuning in to discover whether disgraced MP Aidan Hoynes would better his political rivals and regain power. The drama was released on DVD on the 13th May. It was also announced that the drama would be shown in Australia.
David was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for his voice work in Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Spies Of Warsaw was broadcast on UKTV in Australia from May 4th and on ARTE in France and Germany from May 17th.
There was BAFTA success for Twenty Twelve: the series narrated by David won the Best Situation Comedy award, while star Olivia Colman was awarded best Female Performance In A Comedy Programme
David contributed to BBC America's special The Doctors Revisited: The Fifth Doctor on Peter Davison.

Theatre



It was announced that Richard II starring David would be streamed live to cinemas across the UK and around the world. Director Greg Doran explained that he had been planning this for some time.
There was more casting news as Nigel Lindsay was confirmed as Bolingbrooke

Film
A new film project was announced for David, What We Did On Our Holiday, which would start shooting in June.The comedy, written by Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin would be filmed on location in Scotland and was scheduled for a UK release in 2014. The film also starred Rosamund Pike, Billy Connolly, Ben Miller and Amelia Bullmore. An Australian distribution deal was struck for the film before shooting even began.
Rubicon Group Holding, the animators of the Postman Pat movie, revealed the the film was in the final stages of production.

Radio
David contributed to the second part of Bernard Who?, the Bernard Cribbins documentary on BBC Radio 4: listen here

Misc
David wrote the sleeve notes to the new Best Of The Proclaimers album
Paul O'Grady revealed that he was still waiting for the return of a pair of trousers he loaned to David in 2010!

June

TV
David won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program for his work on Star Wars: The Clone Wars. 



Dave Filoni, supervising director of the show said: "I am very excited to report that David Tennant has won an Emmy for his portrayal of Huyang in Clone Wars.David is a lifelong Star Wars fan and he has definitely made an indelible mark on the Star Wars universe that generations of fans will enjoy for years to come. Thank you David, the Force is strong with you."
It was announced that Broadchurch would be released on Blu-ray in the UK. The series would also be airing in Australia in July, Canada in August and in Spain. BBC America released promotional photos and an extended preview: 



Olivia Colman talked to My Weekly about working with David. She said, "David Tennant is gorgeous. He is so jolly and happy and witty. Working with him was a big delight.We has a giggle being mean to each other. He is so warm and charming. On Broadchurch we would all go to the pub and out for dinner. It was like a big family."
Joanna Page talked about taking part in the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special. However, the big Doctor Who news was Matt Smith announcing that he would be leaving the show at Christmas. Speculation about his replacement began almost immediately, and David topped the IGN vote as Most Wanted For the Twelfth Doctor
The Doctor Who Regeneration DVD and Book Set was released on DVD in the UK
David voiced the character of Oscar's Brain in an episode of animated kids' series Fish Hooks: Live From The Hamsterwood Bowl which premiered on Disney Channel in the USA on 21st June.
The three part wildlife documentary Penguins: Spy In The Huddle from John Downer Productions and narrated by David aired in New Zealand

Theatre
On 3rd June,tickets went on sale for the live screenings of Richard II in UK cinemas.

Film



On 17th June, filming began on David's new feature film What We Did On Our Holiday. Scottish locations included Glasgow, Doune, Milngavie, Dumbarton and the Highlands, and Celia Imrie was added to the cast. Photos from filming can be seen here and here. One day, the shoot reportedly caused traffic mayhem on the road between Dumbarton and Balloch as a breakdown scene was filmed.

Audiobooks 
David recorded an audiobook version of the original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang novel by Ian Fleming. 

Misc
David Tennant leant his support to 'The Most Important Thing', a campaign launched by UNCHR, the UN Refugee Agency, to highlight the plight of those forced to flee their homes. 
The Wand Company announced that they were producing a replica Tenth Doctor Sonic Screwdriver based on scans from David's own sonic which had been presented to him when he left Doctor Who
